You usually have the right to choose

After a car accident, many drivers assume they have to use whichever repairer their insurer names. In most cases that isn't true. Under Australian consumer protections and most NSW policies, you generally have the right to nominate your own licensed repairer.

Some policies include an "agreed" or "preferred" repairer arrangement, and a few restrict choice in exchange for a lower premium. The only way to know for certain is to check your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) — or simply call us and we'll help you read it.

Why choosing your repairer matters

The repairer doing the work has the single biggest impact on the quality, safety and finish of your car. A good repairer fixes it to manufacturer standard and stands behind the work; a rushed job can leave colour mismatches, poor panel alignment or hidden structural issues.

  • You keep control of quality and the warranty on the work
  • Your car is repaired to manufacturer specification
  • You deal with people you trust, not a call centre
  • An IAG-approved repairer can still handle your claim directly
